A friend once told me she wanted a pre-stitched saree.
Not because she loved the design. But because she needed it for just ONE occasion — and after that, it could be discarded easily. No draping, no effort, no repeat wear.
The market is full of such options. And that's exactly the problem.
We live in a world where Instagram stories quietly decide how many clothes a woman "needs." Already photographed in that dress once? Technically, it can't be repeated.
So we keep asking for more options. At lesser costs. Worn once. Then off to the landfill.
Now imagine trying to scale a handcrafted brand in THIS world.
A hand-embroidered piece that takes days to complete sits on the same digital shelf as a machine-made lookalike at a fraction of the price. Handwork resists speed — every piece needs time, skill, and patience. None of that can be manufactured on demand.
Handcrafted cannot compete on price or speed. And honestly? It shouldn't.
Its value lies in the very things that make it slow: → The human hands behind it → Skills passed down through generations → Imperfections that make each piece one of a kind
You don't have to be a slow-fashion loyalist to make a difference. Even with machine-made clothing, wiser choices exist.
Before your next purchase, ask yourself: → Will I wear this more than once? → Is it made well enough to last? → Does it hold any value beyond one photograph?
Anything we buy should be worthy of being worn again and again. We owe that much accountability to our own conscience.
So maybe the real question isn't "can handcrafted scale?"
Maybe it's: can we, as buyers, slow down enough to let it?
One conscious purchase at a time.
